Cambodia is facing a surge in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as the country's elderly population continues to grow, raising concerns about its healthcare system's readiness. Health Minister Chheang Ra highlighted that NCDs, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, now account for over half of the country's fatalities. He emphasized the economic and social impact of these diseases, noting that they lead to severe complications, including heart and vascular issues. The government is focusing on early detection and lifestyle changes to combat this growing crisis.

In addition to NCDs, Cambodia is also preparing for a significant increase in its elderly population. Ra pointed out that the percentage of Cambodians over 60 has risen from 5.2 percent in 2000 to 8.9 percent in 2019. By 2050, it is expected to surpass 20 percent, a trend similar to other rapidly developing countries. This demographic shift presents challenges for the healthcare system in providing care and social support for the aging population.

Ra also stressed the importance of addressing environmental factors like clean water access, air quality, and food safety, which could influence the resurgence of climate change-related diseases. To tackle these multifaceted health issues, the country is focusing on interdisciplinary solutions and preventative measures.
