Cambodian Migrant Workers Urged to Return Home to renew Work Visas for Thailand

Thai Authorities Warn of Expiring Visas for Up to 200,000 Cambodian Workers
As April draws to a close, Thai authorities issue a reminder to Cambodian migrant workers: renew your visas before the month ends. Up to 200,000 workers face potential legal action if they fail to do so.

Thai deputy government spokesman Kharom Polpornklang emphasized the importance of renewing visas as a multi-party memorandum of understanding (MoU) on labor cooperation is set to expire on April 30. The expiration of this agreement means that workers must either leave Thailand or risk facing legal consequences.

To ease the process, the Employment Department of the Thai Labor Ministry is collaborating with the Cambodian government to facilitate the rehiring of workers. Employers are urged to submit reemployment applications promptly to reinstate workers' jobs in Thailand.

Loeng Sophon from the Centre for Alliance of Labour and Human Rights (CENTRAL) in Thailand highlighted that Cambodian workers hired under the MoU need to return home to apply for visas to work with either the same or new employers.

However, concerns remain about workers' rights and compliance with labor laws. Many workers still face challenges, such as employers not processing paperwork correctly, leading to legal issues in Thailand.

Efforts are underway to address these issues, with the Cambodian Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training cooperating with Thai ministries and institutions to facilitate legal work processes and ensure workers' rights are met.

As the deadline approaches, it's crucial for Cambodian workers to stay informed and take necessary steps to renew their visas, ensuring their continued employment and well-being in Thailand.
