Preah Dak Village: Cambodia's Contender for the UNWTO Best Tourism Village 2024

Showcasing Cultural Richness: Preah Dak Nominated for Prestigious Global Tourism Award
In a significant announcement by the Siem Reap Provincial Administration, Preah Dak village in Siem Reap province has been selected to represent Cambodia in the 2024 United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Best Tourism Village Competition. This nomination underscores the village's exceptional blend of cultural authenticity and its strategic location near some of Cambodia’s most famous historical sites.

Located in the Preah Dak commune of Banteay Srei district, the village benefits enormously from its proximity to renowned temples such as Banteay Samre and Banteay Srei, and the natural beauty of Phnom Kulen National Park. These attractions provide a steady stream of visitors, drawn not only to the historical and natural sites but also to the vibrant traditional life that the village sustains.

Deputy Director of the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Tourism, Thim Sereyvuth, emphasized that Preah Dak's charm lies in its preservation of traditional Khmer lifestyle, which offers tourists a unique window into authentic Cambodian culture. This authenticity is key to its appeal and its nomination.

Enhancements in local infrastructure, including improved roadways and street lighting, along with innovative community projects like home gardens, have further increased the village’s attractiveness. Preah Dak also participates in the "One Village One Product" initiative, which promotes local specialties such as traditional rice cakes, palm cakes, and Khmer pancakes, along with handicrafts made from bamboo.

The nomination of Preah Dak is part of a broader national strategy to highlight Cambodia’s cultural heritage and tourism potential on the world stage. With eight villages selected nationally to compete, Preah Dak stands out for its cultural richness and community-driven development, positioning it as a strong contender in the UNWTO competition.
