Cambodia Takes the Spotlight at UN’s First Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism

Cambodia's culinary heritage to shine at the upcoming UN Tourism Regional Forum in Cebu, Philippines, highlighting the nation's unique contributions to global gastronomy.
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is set to host the first-ever UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific on June 26 to 27 in Cebu. This forum recognizes the burgeoning role of culinary experiences in authentic travel and their potential to drive sustainable socio-economic development and cultural exchange.

The event will serve as a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices in the tourism sector, emphasizing sustainable practices and the empowerment of local communities through gastronomy tourism. It aims to foster regional and global cooperation in developing culinary tourism, a sector showing great promise due to increasing tourist demand for authentic and immersive cultural experiences.

Cambodia is poised to be a standout participant, leveraging its rich cultural heritage and recent accolades in global gastronomy. Highlighted by its success at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, where ‘The Taste of Angkor’ was named Best Asian Cookbook in 2021, Cambodia's culinary scene is ready to showcase its depth and diversity. The cookbook combines traditional Cambodian dishes with vivid imagery of the country’s temples and landscapes, reflecting the nation's vibrant culture and traditions.

Further cementing its gastronomic credentials, Cambodia celebrated another victory with 'SAOY' being named the World’s Best Cookbook in 2023 at the Saudi Feast Food Festival in Riyadh, a testament to Chef Nak’s efforts to uplift Cambodia’s culinary profile on the global stage.

The forum will enable Cambodia to further its role as a cultural ambassador, presenting its traditional cooking methods and local ingredients. This initiative aligns with the UN's sustainable development goals and aims to strengthen Cambodia's influence in international relations through gastronomy tourism, promoting socio-cultural cooperation and highlighting the country's commitment to preserving its culinary heritage.
