Strengthening Cambodia's Agriculture: Shanghai Ocean University Boosts Rice-Fish Farming

A collaborative effort aims to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability through the Fish and Rice Corridor initiative.
A team from Shanghai Ocean University has recently completed a week-long visit to Cambodia, marking significant progress in promoting rice-fish and rice-shrimp farming, essential components of the Fish and Rice Corridor project between Cambodia and China. This initiative aims to expand agri-trade and boost bilateral cooperation in sustainable agriculture practices.

During their stay from April 21 to 27, the research team, led by Professor Wu Xugan, engaged in extensive field studies across several Cambodian provinces and conducted training sessions for local farmers. The visit, part of a broader initiative that began in 2021, focuses on integrating rice cultivation with aquaculture to tackle the challenges of high market prices and limited production scales in Cambodia's freshwater aquaculture.

Professor Wu highlighted the vast potential for growth in the sector, noting the stark contrast in available aquaculture land compared to rice cultivation areas. Despite challenges like the seasonal dependency of farming practices and inadequate infrastructure, the team is optimistic about the future of this integrated farming method in Cambodia.

In collaboration with Cambodian officials, such as Thay Somony from the Department of Aquaculture Development, the team visited and provided expertise at three demonstration farms in Takeo province. They aim to refine techniques that accommodate local conditions while promoting more extensive, commercial-scale operations.

The initiative also focuses on education and skill development, with efforts to attract Cambodian students into the field. Virakbot Hou, a postgraduate student from Shanghai Ocean University, is a testament to these efforts. Having studied aquaculture since 2022, he is now actively involved in research that has already benefitted 20 local farming families.

This collaboration between Shanghai Ocean University and Cambodian authorities continues to lay the groundwork for a robust, sustainable aquaculture industry in Cambodia, promising a future where local farmers can thrive economically while preserving their environmental resources.
