Journalist Seriously Injured in Shooting in Siem Reap; Authorities Launch Investigation

Chhoeung Chheng, a journalist with Kampuchea Aphivath, is recovering from serious gunshot wounds while police work to identify the attacker
On December 4, 2024, Chhoeung Chheng, a 63-year-old journalist for online news outlet Kampuchea Aphivath, was seriously injured in a shooting incident in Trapang Phloh village, Pongroleu commune, Siem Reap province. According to his wife, Chiev Chab, Chheng sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of his abdomen, which nearly impacted the left side as well. He is currently undergoing surgery at a hospital in Siem Reap.

The Siem Reap Provincial Police have launched an investigation into the shooting, but the perpetrator remains unidentified. The attack, reportedly carried out with a homemade weapon, occurred at around 6 p.m. on December 4. The police have yet to comment on the specific reasons for the attack.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of journalists in Cambodia. Nop Vy, Executive Director of CamboJA, condemned the attack, emphasizing the risks faced by journalists, especially those covering sensitive topics that may anger individuals involved in illegal activities. Vy also called on authorities to ensure a swift investigation and prosecution of those responsible to combat the culture of impunity.
