A newly published camera trap study from NatureLife Cambodia and the Ministry of Environment, supported by USAID’s Morodok Baitang initiative, has confirmed that Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary remains a crucial habitat for large wild ungulates and other endangered species. Over a 10-month period, the survey recorded 28 species, ranging from the massive gaur to the critically endangered banteng and black-shanked douc langur, underlining the sanctuary’s role as a biodiversity hotspot in Southeast Asia.

Officials note that Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary’s rich ecosystem benefits local communities who rely on the forest for their livelihoods, despite ongoing threats from deforestation, forest degradation, and illegal hunting. As part of the REDD+ Project, current measures include wetland restoration, wildlife-friendly farming, and community co-management efforts, all contributing to sustainable development and long-term conservation success.
