What Makes the Sun Different, and Special, at Angkor?

The sun’s movements at Angkor Wat and its surroundings reveal the ancient Khmer mastery of architecture and astronomy.

So, what makes sunrises and sunsets in Angkor Archeological Park unique? Why should people spend hours on on roads or in planes just to be at the Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap province at the right time?

This is a question that may challenge what are, after all
Siem Reap is home to one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world—Angkor. From the magnificent Angkor Wat temple to its surrounding landscape, the sun rises and sets in unique ways that draw visitors from around the world. While the rising and setting of the sun is a common phenomenon, what makes the sun at Angkor special is not just the beauty of the moment but the meticulous planning and engineering that went into creating this spectacle, which has been happening for centuries.

The Angkor Wat temple is known for its distinct orientation. Unlike other temples built facing east to welcome the sunrise, Angkor Wat faces west, a rare engineering choice during the Khmer Empire. This alignment, coupled with the temple's intricate architecture, demonstrates an impressive understanding of astronomy. Twice a year, during the equinox in March and September, the sun aligns perfectly with the central tower of Angkor Wat, creating a breathtaking visual effect of a "crown of fire" above the temple. This phenomenon, a result of the precise positioning of the temple, continues to attract visitors eager to witness this remarkable event.

Beyond Angkor Wat, other temples like Phnom Bakheng and Pre Rup offer spectacular sunset views. Phnom Bakheng, built on a mountain, provides a sweeping view of the Angkor complex, rice paddies, and the West Baray reservoir. Pre Rup, built from orange laterite stone, offers a less crowded yet equally beautiful perspective of the surrounding villages and fertile lands. Additionally, smaller temples like Phnom Krom, with its private atmosphere and tranquil setting overlooking the Tonle Sap Lake, offer a serene experience for those looking to witness the sun setting over Cambodia's vast wetlands.
