A Second Trump Presidency: What It Means for Cambodia

Cambodia faces a changing relationship with the US as Donald Trump prepares for a second term
As Donald Trump prepares for his second presidency, Cambodia is bracing for the potential effects on its relationship with the US. Analysts predict that a second term could see limited focus on human rights and democratic reforms in favor of pragmatic engagement centered on countering Chinese influence in Southeast Asia. With Cambodia's garment and textile exports closely tied to China, Trump's tariff policies could pose a significant challenge, especially with the US being Cambodia's largest export market.

While Cambodia’s strategic importance in the US-China rivalry may keep the focus on trade and security, the Trump administration could maintain pressure on the country’s human rights record, possibly resulting in sanctions or aid cuts. Cambodia’s civil society could feel the impact of reduced aid, particularly in media and human rights sectors. The rise of transnational cybercrime, especially from scam centers operating in Cambodia, may also lead to further tensions and potential national security threats.

Despite these challenges, Cambodia’s strong ties to China will likely continue to influence its foreign policy. With the US shifting its focus to economic and security issues under Trump, Cambodia may look to balance its relationships within the region, ensuring it avoids over-reliance on either the US or China.
