Cambodia to Host Landmark Summit on Mine-Free World
The Siem Reap-Angkor Summit aims to advance global efforts against landmines.
Cambodia is set to host the Fifth Review Conference of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention from November 25 to 29, welcoming over 600 delegates from more than 80 countries. Titled the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World, the event underscores Cambodia’s commitment to mine eradication and its leadership within the treaty, considered one of the most successful humanitarian disarmament agreements.
Senior Minister Ly Thuch, President of the Convention for 2024, emphasized Cambodia’s dedication to clearing mines and supporting victims, highlighting the nation’s long history of tackling explosive ordnance. The summit will assess treaty progress, address challenges in affected regions, and promote victim assistance efforts, with updates expected from over 35 member states, including Cambodia, Colombia, and Ukraine.
States not yet party to the treaty, such as China, Vietnam, and the United States, are invited to join discussions, while the event will culminate with the adoption of a new action plan for 2025-2029. Japan will assume the presidency after the summit.
