Cambodia Gears Up for Bon Om Touk: A Vibrant Water Festival Returns

The historic celebration of Bon Om Touk brings vibrant colors, food, and culture to Phnom Penh as the Tonle Sap River changes course.
Cambodia is eagerly preparing for Bon Om Touk, the traditional mid-autumn Water Festival celebrated in late October. The festival, known for its colorful dragon boat races, fireworks, and vibrant street food, marks the end of the rainy season and the reversal of the Tonle Sap River’s flow—a unique phenomenon in Cambodia.

Last year, two million people gathered to witness the festival’s return after years of disruption. The event was suppressed under the Khmer Rouge regime and interrupted by past tragedies and COVID-19. However, the festival has rebounded stronger than ever, with Phnom Penh’s riverbanks alive with street food stalls, lively music, and joyful crowds.

Phnom Penh itself has transformed into one of Asia's top party destinations, boasting modern hotels, trendy restaurants, and bustling nightlife. The festival is an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to celebrate Cambodia’s rich heritage, with everything from twilight picnics to city-wide food tours lighting up the streets.
