Cambodia Accelerates Clean Energy Transition with Focus on Electric Vehicles

New policies aim to boost EV adoption in transportation sector by 2030
As Cambodia intensifies its clean energy efforts, calls are growing for food delivery companies to adopt electric vehicles (EVs) as part of a broader environmental push. During Clean Energy Week 2024, panelists highlighted the potential of EVs to transform logistics in Cambodia’s urban areas. Michael Renfrew from EnergyLab noted that shifting to EVs will redefine transportation across cities, making it both sustainable and efficient.

In support of this goal, Cambodia’s National Policy on EV Development aims to register 770,000 electric vehicles by 2030, including light and heavy EVs, electric motorcycles, and electric tuk-tuks. YADEA’s CEO Yiv Phanna added that interest in eco-friendly motorcycles has surged, particularly due to rising fuel prices and environmental awareness. FoodPanda’s Kimhak Choun reported that 17 percent of their drivers now use electric motorcycles, citing reduced costs and improved air quality as key benefits.

Cambodia’s government is also taking steps to promote EV adoption by reducing taxes on EV imports and creating supportive infrastructure like charging stations. With comprehensive policies, Cambodia aims to achieve a carbon-neutral economy by 2050, benefiting both citizens and the environment.
