Chinese Tourism to Cambodia Surges Nearly 50% in First Nine Months of 2024
Increased arrivals boost Cambodia’s tourism sector, creating wider investment opportunities
Cambodia saw a significant increase in Chinese tourists in the first nine months of 2024, with a rise of almost 50 percent compared to the previous year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, 607,542 Chinese visitors traveled to Cambodia between January and September, accounting for 12.65 percent of the 4.8 million total international arrivals. China is now the third-largest source of tourists to Cambodia, following Thailand and Vietnam.
Tourism Minister Huot Hak highlighted the impact of this growth on Cambodia’s economy, noting that the influx of Chinese visitors supports not only the tourism sector but also generates investment potential across other industries. Projections for 2025 suggest that Cambodia could welcome up to seven million international tourists, with over two million expected from China.
Tourism, along with garment exports, agriculture, and construction, is one of Cambodia's economic pillars. Last year, the sector generated $3.08 billion in revenue, driven by attractions such as the Angkor Archaeological Park and other UNESCO-listed heritage sites.
