Cambodia’s Public Debt Reaches US$11.27 Billion in 2024, Says Finance Ministry

Public debt remains sustainable as the government secures concessional loans for key development projects.
By the end of the second quarter of 2024, Cambodia’s public debt stood at US$11.27 billion, with 99 percent classified as external debt, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s latest report. The debt is primarily in U.S. dollars, accounting for 47 percent, with significant portions also in SDRs, Chinese yuan, and Japanese yen.

The government secured US$313 million in new concessional loans in the first half of the year to fund public investment projects. Despite the rise in debt, officials reassured that Cambodia’s public debt remains sustainable and at low risk, with the country maintaining responsible debt servicing.
