UNICEF Cautions About the Lethal Effects of Air Pollution on Children

More than 100 children die each day due to pollution in the air across East Asia and the Pacific.
A recent analysis by UNICEF highlights the devastating effects of air pollution on children, deeming it a “silent killer” linked to over 100 daily fatalities among those under five in East Asia and the Pacific. The report notes that 500 million children in the region reside in areas with unsafe air quality, with pollution levels escalating during the dry season from now until April.

The analysis indicates that nearly half of PM2.5 pollution stems from the burning of fossil fuels and waste incineration, negatively affecting children's lung development and cognitive abilities. The World Bank approximates that, in 2019, air pollution cost the region 9.3 percent of its GDP.

UNICEF calls on governments to enhance environmental policies, transition to renewable energy sources, and implement air quality regulations. The organization is collaborating with policymakers, businesses, and communities to address the crisis and safeguard children’s health.
