Cambodia is advancing fish passage technology to support fisheries in the Mekong region, becoming the second country after Laos to construct these structures. Fishways help migratory species navigate irrigation and hydropower barriers, ensuring sustainable fish populations.

At the 2nd Lower Mekong Basin Fish Passage Conference on February 5, experts highlighted the role of fishways in food security. The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research is committing 18 million Australian Dollars in 2025 to fisheries research across Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, with a 5.2 million Australian Dollar project supporting fishway adoption.

The Sleng Fishway in Siem Reap has already benefited local communities, improving fish yields and food security. With plans to expand, Cambodia is reinforcing its commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
