Cambodia's plan to construct the Funan Techo canal, a 180 km waterway connecting the Gulf of Thailand to inland provinces, has stirred controversy both domestically and abroad. Despite concerns over its environmental and geopolitical impacts, Cambodian leader Hun Sen remains resolute in pushing the project forward.

The canal, officially known as the Tonle Bassac Navigation Road and Logistics System Project, aims to reduce Cambodia's reliance on Vietnamese sea ports for international trade. However, Vietnamese experts warn that the canal could significantly reduce water flow to the Mekong delta, impacting millions of people reliant on rice cultivation.

Hun Sen, who views the project as a national interest, dismisses these concerns, asserting that any water loss would affect Cambodia first. He reaffirms his decision-making prowess, touting his 47-year track record without making a wrong decision.

Despite calls for transparency and environmental impact assessments from both Vietnam and the United States, Hun Sen remains steadfast, emphasizing Cambodia's sovereignty in internal development decisions.
