Cambodian Tourism Slowly Rebounds Post-Covid with Growing Local Interest

Increased domestic tourism supports guides and revitalizes heritage sites like Angkor Wat
Following the lifting of international post-Covid-19 travel restrictions, Cambodia is experiencing a gradual increase in visitors, with local tourism emerging as a crucial support as foreign arrivals have yet to reach pre-pandemic levels. At iconic sites like Angkor Wat, busy guides like Meas Sovannaroth are finding renewed purpose by catering to both domestic tourists and the slowly returning international visitors. This shift has allowed guides to balance their work with other jobs, such as Sovannaroth’s part-time role as a Grab driver, ensuring they can support their families while contributing to the revival of Cambodia’s rich historical sites.

The surge in local interest has been beneficial for both guides and Cambodian visitors, who are increasingly fascinated by the country’s history, culture, and architectural heritage. Experienced guides like Kea Simon observe that Cambodian tourists now seek deeper understanding of temple sculptures and historical narratives, fostering a stronger connection to their cultural legacy. Additionally, initiatives by the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Tourism to educate young Khmer about their heritage have further enhanced appreciation and preservation of Cambodia’s cultural assets, ensuring that the growing domestic tourism sector supports the sustainability of the guide profession and the broader tourism industry.

Despite positive signs, such as a 32% increase in international arrivals in early 2024 and the successful opening of the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, experts like Khieu Thy of the Angkor Tour Guide Association remain cautious about the future. While the current rise in domestic tourism provides essential support, the overall recovery of the tourism sector remains uncertain. Continued efforts to attract both national and international visitors, alongside strategic campaigns like "The Kingdom of Wonder," are essential to fully restore Cambodia’s tourism industry and achieve long-term economic stability.
