Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to Succeed Lee Hsien Loong as Prime Minister on May 15

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will step down on May 15, 2024, and be replaced by his deputy, Lawrence Wong.
Wong, who is also the finance minister, was chosen as Lee's successor in 2022 from a new generation of leaders in the People's Action Party (PAP), which has ruled Singapore since its independence in 1965.

Lee asked for the public's support for Wong and his team to create a brighter future for Singapore.

Wong, a 51-year-old US-educated economist and social media-savvy stalwart, has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Singapore with a pledge to give his all.

Widely recognized for effectively managing the Covid-19 crisis as head of the government's pandemic taskforce, Singapore was among the first Asian countries to recover with business and tourism numbers picking up.

Known in Southeast Asia and to major powers China and the US, Wong's appointment is seen as a continuity move.

The speaker believes that the incoming prime minister of Singapore brings a new leadership style suited to a newer generation, while the core principles of Singapore's system, established by Lee Kuan Yew during his tenure as the first prime minister, will remain.
