Cambodia's Cleanliness Drive: Reducing Plastic Usage for a Happier New Year

Ministry of Environment Leads Efforts for Cleanliness and Plastic Reduction
Proper garbage storage and reduced plastic usage play a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness of pagodas and public areas, ensuring the happiness of people during the New Year festivities in Cambodia.

According to the Ministry of Environment, hygiene and aesthetics in public places, tourist sites, pagodas, and localities are essential for creating a beautiful environment appreciated by both national and international tourists visiting Cambodia during the Khmer New Year celebrations.

To address this, authorities have implemented measures and guidelines to minimize plastic waste and its adverse effects. This year has seen a positive shift in attitudes toward littering, with the "Today I do not use plastic bags" campaign gaining significant momentum nationwide. Nearly 8 million citizens, including over 3.4 million students, have pledged to refrain from using plastic at least one day a week.

Collaborating with national and international partners, capital and provincial administrations, ministries, and institutions have joined hands with the Ministry of Environment to ensure a clean environment throughout cities and towns, focusing on eliminating plastic pollution.

Improvements in garbage storage facilities and the organization of cleaning and sanitation teams by the Department of Environment of the Capital and Provinces aim to educate and engage the public in environmental hygiene practices.

Minister of Environment, Eang Sophalleth, emphasizes that cleanliness and health are top priorities for the Royal Government of Cambodia. Waste management, particularly reducing plastic waste, is crucial for creating clean communities, lakes, and natural resource areas free from plastic pollution.

The Ministry urges citizens to participate in proper waste collection, storage, sorting, recycling, and responsible disposal practices.

Expressing gratitude to relevant ministries, institutions, partners, local authorities, teachers, students, and citizens, the Ministry of Environment acknowledges their contributions to environmental development, particularly in eliminating plastic waste from communities, schools, and pagodas.
