The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has warned that all unregistered vessels will be banned from operating in Cambodian waters. The directive, reiterated in a March 4 notice, requires vessel owners to register with the General Department of Waterway and Maritime Transport and Ports to comply with the Law on Waterway Transportation, enacted last year.

The ministry emphasized that vessel registration is essential for ensuring proper management, safety, and environmental protection. Owners who fail to comply will face restrictions on their operations. Technical inspections conducted by qualified inspectors are also mandatory for registered vessels. As of late 2024, Cambodia had 1,373 registered vessels, with the majority being cargo, passenger, or fishing vessels. However, in the four coastal provinces alone, there are over 8,000 vessels, many of which remain unregistered.

Authorities urge vessel owners to submit their registration applications through the department or provincial One Window Service Offices. Strengthening registration and monitoring efforts aims to improve transparency, ensure legal compliance, and maintain order in Cambodia’s growing maritime sector.
