Thailand, China, and Myanmar Get Ready for Tri-National Discussions on Cross-Border Crime

Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has declared intentions to hold a joint meeting focused on tackling cross-border crime, which encompasses scams and human trafficking.
A meeting featuring representatives from Thailand, China, and Myanmar is set to discuss the escalating concerns regarding transnational crime.

On Monday, Thailand's Foreign Affairs Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, announced that the trilateral talks will prioritize the formulation of effective, long-term strategies to combat various types of cross-border criminal activities, particularly scams and organized call center operations.

Maris conveyed his confidence that this new trilateral framework will strengthen cooperation among the three countries in addressing these interconnected challenges.

The Thai government has prioritized the battle against transnational crime, leading to collaborative efforts with China under a mutual security agreement.

In this regard, Chinese officials are expected to dispatch representatives to help Thailand dismantle call center networks that are operating both domestically and internationally.

In his remarks, Maris underscored Thailand's willingness to engage in comprehensive collaboration with all nations to effectively address transnational crime through a structured governmental framework.

His statements were made during his inaugural official visit to Vietnam, where he conferred with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son.

In addition to the forthcoming trilateral discussions, Minister Maris pointed out Thailand's continuous endeavors to tackle broader security threats through international dialogue platforms.

For example, at the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi last July, discussions encompassed issues like cybersecurity and arms trafficking.

India, noted for its robust countermeasures, is anticipated to collaborate with Thailand in developing strategies against these criminal activities, while Thailand aims to work with Myanmar to mitigate the suffering of human trafficking victims.

Additional initiatives were considered during the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Chiang Mai last August.

The Thai government has also advocated for enhanced cross-border security initiatives and measures to combat trafficking and online scams at two major consultations held in Bangkok in December 2024.

During the ASEAN Informal Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Langkawi, Malaysia, on January 19, 2025, Maris reaffirmed Thailand’s dedication to protecting its citizens from threats related to drug trafficking and online fraud, emphasizing the urgent need for international cooperation in law enforcement and crime prevention.
