Cambodian authorities have arrested two individuals for allegedly using the name of top politician Hun Sen to deceive victims on Telegram, scamming them out of $180,000.

The suspects, a beauty salon worker and a shopping center security guard, created a fake Telegram account impersonating Hun Sen’s official channel, tricking people into investing with promises of high returns. Following an investigation, the Anti-Cyber Crime Department apprehended them with approval from Phnom Penh Municipal Court prosecutors.

Authorities warn that Cambodia lacks a dedicated cybercrime law, meaning fraud cases are prosecuted under the existing criminal code. Officials also urge the public to stay vigilant, as scams using fake social media accounts and deceptive reward schemes are on the rise.
