In a proactive response to the looming threat of climate change, the Cambodian government has identified forest conservation and reforestation as paramount objectives of its environmental agenda. Chuop Paris, Deputy Minister of Environment, announced this strategic focus during an interview on April 9, following his participation in a climate change seminar for local and international journalists in Siem Reap Province.

With the aim of maintaining Cambodia's forest cover at 60% by 2050, the government has launched a series of initiatives to promote tree planting and safeguard existing woodlands. Paris emphasized the need for sustained efforts and strategic environmental management to provide alternative livelihoods for forest-dependent communities. This transition is crucial not only to mitigate climate change impacts but also to offer sustainable solutions and infrastructure for adapting traditional livelihoods while preserving environmental integrity.

Among the alternatives proposed to communities are animal husbandry and ecotourism, considered viable and sustainable options for economic development.

Despite its relatively low contribution to global carbon emissions, Cambodia is highly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. Therefore, forest preservation and enhancement efforts remain central to the Royal Government's environmental policy, underscoring the nation's commitment to addressing global climate challenges.
