Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pham Thu Hang, emphasized Vietnam's desire for Cambodia to work closely with all stakeholders to evaluate the project's effects on water resources and the ecological environment of the Mekong sub-region.

Addressing recent statements from Cambodia regarding the canal project, Hang reaffirmed Vietnam's commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations, rooted in shared history, friendship, and cooperation. She underscored Vietnam's respect for Cambodia's interests under international agreements and emphasized the importance of sustainable development and solidarity among riparian nations.

Le Anh Tuan, a Senior Lecturer at Can Tho University, highlighted potential downstream impacts, expressing concerns about decreased water flow to the Mekong Delta, particularly during dry seasons. With the Cambodian government's approval of the project in May 2023, discussions intensify regarding its potential economic benefits and environmental consequences.
