Cambodia Acknowledges Positive Changes in Vietnam's Southern Khmer Region

Cambodian Media Highlights Progress and Initiatives Benefiting Khmer Ethnic Minority Communities
Cambodian newspapers have recently spotlighted the significant improvements in the lives of Khmer ethnic minority people residing in Vietnam's southern region. These positive changes are attributed to Vietnam's dedicated ethnic programmes and initiatives aimed at uplifting marginalized communities.

On April 12, Cambodia's national news agency AKP featured an article focusing on Soc Trang province in Vietnam's Mekong Delta, which boasts the largest population of Khmer ethnic minority people in the region, accounting for approximately 30.18% of the province's total population. The article emphasized the close cultural and ethnic bonds between the Khmer communities in Soc Trang and Cambodia.

Ho Thi Cam Dao, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, highlighted the gradual improvement in the material and spiritual lives of local Khmer people, with a notable decrease in the poverty rate within their community.

These positive outcomes are credited to the effective implementation of various programmes and projects tailored to the needs of the Khmer community, including a 60-billion-VND programme aimed at constructing 1,200 houses for the poor, completed in early 2024. Additionally, Vietnam's national programme for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas provides direct support measures concerning housing, agricultural land, water access, vocational training, and employment opportunities.

Meanwhile, on April 11, the news portal lookingtoday.com of the information center DAP NEWS highlighted Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security's programme to build 1,200 houses for poor families.

Secretary of the Soc Trang Party Committee Lam Van Man emphasized the significance of this initiative in empowering local impoverished households to overcome challenges and achieve sustainable poverty alleviation.

Furthermore, a detailed analysis by Uch Leang, a researcher at the Royal Academy of Cambodia (RAC), published on the online news site domreynews.com, highlighted the visible improvements and transformations in regions of Vietnam with large Khmer populations, such as Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Kien Giang, An Giang, and Bac Lieu. Leang underscored the advancements in rural transport, healthcare, education, and the implementation of policies supporting Khmer people's production activities, facilitating their access to preferential loans and promoting sustainable agricultural economic models.

These measures have created conducive conditions for Khmer communities to enhance production, increase incomes, and stabilize their lives, reflecting Vietnam's commitment to the socio-economic development and well-being of its ethnic minority populations.
