Cambodia and China’s Yunnan Province Strengthen Ties with Marathon Cooperation Agreement

The agreement aims to boost cultural and tourism exchange through marathon participation.
Cambodia and China’s Yunnan Province have inked a new cooperation agreement to promote each other's marathon events, extending their collaboration beyond mere athletic competition to include cultural and tourism exchanges. The agreement was signed by Dr. Thong Khon, President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), during his visit to the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Dali Marathon 2024 on May 19 in Dali City, Yunnan.

Under this new partnership, Cambodia will send athletes and volunteer runners to participate in the annual Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Dali Marathon. Additionally, Cambodia will set up pavilions at the marathon to showcase its culture and products, aiming to attract more tourists and deepen cultural ties.

In reciprocation, Yunnan Province will send 100 athletes and 500 volunteer runners to participate in this year’s Angkor Empire Full Marathon, which is scheduled to take place in August in Siem Reap Province. Yunnan will also take the opportunity to highlight its own culture and products during the event.

This mutual promotion and participation are anticipated to significantly boost the number of participants at each marathon, fostering a deeper connection between the two regions. This initiative not only underscores the strengthening of sports diplomacy between Cambodia and China but also highlights the potential for increased tourism and cultural exchange through such collaborative efforts.
