Traffic fatalities fall to 1,509, yet calls grow for stricter enforcement and safety measures
Cambodia recorded a five percent decline in road fatalities in 2024, with 1,509 deaths reported—a decrease of 81 from the previous year. According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, excessive speeding and failure to follow traffic laws were the leading causes of the 2,844 road accidents reported.
Experts, including Kim Pagna of the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, praised the progress but urged stronger law enforcement, better public education, and increased funding for road safety. Motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable, accounting for 70 to 80 percent of fatalities, with helmet use still worryingly low, especially at night and in rural areas.
