Consultation Aims To Ease Concerns Over Cambodia's Funan-Techo Canal Project

Vietnam National Mekong Committee consults on potential impacts to Mekong River
In a recent consultation workshop hosted by the Vietnam National Mekong Committee (VNMC), stakeholders gathered to discuss Cambodia's proposed Funan-Techo canal project and its potential ramifications for the Mekong River. Held in Can Tho, the workshop brought together domestic stakeholders and international experts to examine the project's scope, impacts, and mitigation measures.

The proposed Funan-Techo canal, spanning 180 kilometers, aims to link the Bassac River (known as the Hau River in Vietnam) with Kep Port and the Gulf of Thailand. While Cambodia has notified the International Mekong River Commission (MRC) about the project, concerns have been raised regarding its cross-border impact, particularly on the water resources of the Mekong Delta.

As the Bassac River is a vital distributary of the Mekong River, any alterations to its flow could have significant implications for water resources in the delta. With the region already grappling with drought and saltwater intrusion, participants underscored the importance of assessing and mitigating the project's potential impacts.

Associate Professor Dr. Le Anh Tuan from Can Tho University emphasized that while the Funan-Techo canal could adversely affect the Mekong Delta, the extent of its influence would depend on its scale and usage. Participants urged Cambodia to transparently share project details and engage in joint research to devise appropriate monitoring and mitigation measures.

Moving forward, the VNMC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, will continue to work closely with the MRC Secretariat and Cambodia to accelerate research on the project's impacts and propose mitigation strategies. Given the significance of the Mekong Delta as Vietnam's agricultural hub, safeguarding its water resources is paramount to ensuring the region's sustainability amidst changing climate patterns.
