Over 80,000 People Benefit from Free Buses in Phnom Penh for Khmer New Year

Phnom Penh Capital Administration officials have reported a significant surge in the utilization of free bus services during the Khmer New Year holiday period. From April 12 to 17, more than 80,000 workers and citizens availed themselves of complimentary bus rides to their hometowns across various provinces, marking a notable increase compared to the previous year.

Met Measpheakdey, spokesperson for the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration, disclosed that the number of passengers utilizing the free bus services surpassed 80,000 during this Khmer New Year, reflecting a remarkable uptick of over 20,000 individuals, equivalent to a 35% rise in comparison to transport figures recorded during the traditional New Year celebrations in 2023.

The data revealed that Siem Reap and Battambang were the provinces with the highest number of commuters utilizing the free bus services, with Siem Reap registering approximately 25,000 passengers and Battambang recording over 10,000 passengers.

Measpheakdey also emphasized that the transportation of passengers during the New Year period transpired without significant issues, with operations running smoothly and safely, ensuring a hassle-free travel experience for citizens.

Expressing gratitude towards Prime Minister Hun Manet and the Phnom Penh Capital Administration, citizens from diverse backgrounds extended their congratulations and appreciation for the continued provision of free bus services to facilitate travel to their hometowns during the Khmer New Year festivities.

In an endeavor to alleviate the financial burden on individuals traveling to reunite with their families during the Khmer New Year, the Phnom Penh Capital Administration deployed a total of 455 buses to provide complimentary transportation services for six days, spanning from April 12 to 17.
