Siem Reap's Protected Areas Set to Boost Community Livelihoods Through Tourism

Ministry of Environment Initiates Efforts to Enhance Sustainable Development
The Ministry of Environment, under the Royal Government of Cambodia, is taking steps to develop entertainment venues in Siem Reap's protected areas, aiming to empower local communities economically while promoting environmental conservation.

Chuop Paris, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment, views the establishment of recreation areas and tents for local communities as part of a broader environmental strategy. Beyond combating natural resource crimes and striving to increase Cambodia's forest cover by 60% by 2050, these initiatives are geared towards uplifting communities out of poverty by generating income from tourism.

Phan Thon, Community President of the Prey Thom Anlong Thom Community Protected Area, situated on Kulen Mountain's ridge, emphasized the positive impact of tourism on community livelihoods. He highlighted how the community has leveraged tourism by selling local products and providing food and transportation services to visitors exploring the natural forests.

According to Sun Kong, Director of the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Environment, Siem Reap is home to eight state-controlled protected areas, covering over 280,000 hectares. These areas play a critical role in preventing unauthorized encroachment and conserving forests and wildlife. Additionally, they serve as essential hubs for sustainable landscapes and eco-tourism promotion in the region.
